How to become a WordPress developer

WordPress is one of the best platforms that you can use if you want to create your own website. The most important thing about this platform is that it is user-friendly. It will not take much time to learn how to create your own website. On the other hand, it will not be too difficult for you to understand how to maintain it. It has a lot of settings that you can set. Also, it comes with a lot of information that will help you set up the site in the right way. So, as the WordPress developer, you should have the right understanding of the platform and you should be able to install it.

If you want to be successful as a WordPress developer, you need to understand the right way of working. Otherwise, you might end up frustrated in your job. You also need to understand that you cannot just manage the website without knowledge of the website design and coding. It is also very important for you to know what are the most common problems that your clients have encountered while they were using your website. It is also important to know how to troubleshoot their problems so that they do not have to look for someone else. In addition, you should also learn how to create your own theme so that you can easily make use of them in your own websites.

Step 1: Learn HTML and CSS. These is the primary code of web. You will not be able to output anything of consequence on to a computer screen without first learning HTML and CSS. Learn to code – for free | Codecademy has a great free online course that will help you to build a website from scratch.

I would say you should get the basics down before moving to step 2.

Step 2: Learn PHP. WordPress is built with the computer programming language PHP. There are a lot of good resources to learn PHP online. http://Learn-php.org is a good resource to start with there are many others.

Getting a good grasp on PHP will help you tremendously with WordPress.

Step 3: Learn WordPress. I can’t stress this enough not all good PHP programmers are good WordPress programmers. WordPress has been around for 15 years now and – for better or for worse – has grown a mind of its own. You’ll need to spend a great deal of time learning how WordPress functions work in order to build your own custom themes and plugins.

The best way to learn WP is to dive into the many resources out there and get your hands dirty by creating a simple theme and plugin.

You’ll want to reference the WordPress Codex as it’s the most up to date resource on how to build using the WordPress platform.

Step 4: Learn JavaScript. Oh, how I wish this was step 2 or 3, but alas you need everything else before you need JavaScript. In Dec. of 2015 Matt Mullenweg the Co-Founder of Automattic the company behind WordPress charged all WordPress developers to ‘…learn JavaScript deeply…’. As WordPress was catching up with the rest of the internet and fully utilizing the power the JavaScript language.

As of September 2017, JavaScript is the second most used programming language and if you are going to be a ‘full’ WordPress developer you need to know it.

Step 5: Join the fun and help update WordPress Core. Yes, that’s right you could eventually, be responsible for creating a patch or a new feature to WordPress itself. And you are encouraged to do so.

How much do WordPress developers earn

It depend on your interest. You may have following choices :

  1. If you are good at php then you may become a WordPress developer and create professional plugin and theme and earn thousands of dollar per month by selling them.
  2. If you are interested in website developing, then you be a professional website developer like me and develop other’s website and earn from that.
  3. If you want to be a freelancer then you can create your own blog and write about what you are interested in and earn money by affiliate marketing of different product and by placing ads on your website. You can refer this post. Example – Mashable.com earns $650,000 per/Month from adsense and Shoutmelod.com earns $34,390 per/Month.
